DFI LanParty UT P35-T2R

The LANParty UT P35-T2R places DFI's latest motherboard in an increasingly-competitive segment of the motherboard market, as Asus and Foxconn are no lightweights to take on. However, DFI has been offering gaming motherboards for many years and has some profound expertise itself.

This motherboard is based on a black PCB with green and yellow components, giving it a unique visual appearance. The massive aluminum heat pipe extends from a flat heat sink on the Southbridge, runs along the Northbridge with a solid LANParty-branded heat sink, and reaches a heat sink at the back panel. DFI's special feature is a mountable addition to the heat pipe, which it calls Transpiper. You can mount it onto the Southbridge or onto the back panel heat sink and Transpiper will extend the heat pipe by another segment, which ends in a massive aluminum heat sink. If you place it onto the back panel heat sink you can mount it in a way that that heat sink will reach out of the computer to dissipate heat.

The Bernstein HD audio module is placed onto a small PCB and has to be mounted like a slot cover. A flat ribbon cable connects the audio module to the appropriate header on the motherboard. There are a total of eight SATA/300 ports; six of them are powered by the ICH9R Southbridge and two more ports along with an UltraATA/133 channel are provided by an additional mass storage controller by JMicron. The additional ports are bootable just like the chipset integrated ones are.

You will find three 32-bit PCI slots and three x16 PCI Express slots on the LANParty UT P35-T2R. However, the PCIe slots are only laid out as x16 to allow for all PCI Express cards to be installed. The first slot runs 16 lanes, the second one four and the third x16 slot only runs a single PCIe lane. The 32-bit PCI slots are well distributed, and leave at least two of them available even if you run dual-slot PCIe graphics cards.

Traditionally, DFI has designed in hardware power and reset buttons on its LANParty motherboards; that's the case again with this one. There also is a two-digit LED display to report BIOS POST codes (power on self test), which helps to diagnose misbehavior or other issues. We found six fan headers on the LANParty UT P35-T2R, which should be appropriate even for highly overclocked gaming systems.

From an overclocking standpoint we've got decent news as well: We reached 490 MHz FSB speed reliably; 500 MHz crashed once in a while. However, DFI offers many ways to tweak and tune system and memory settings and it might be possible to achieve even slightly more system speed. We also found ITE's SmartGuardian software bundled with this motherboard. It allows comprehensive monitoring of component voltages, temperatures and fan speeds. You may also adjust all six fan speeds.

DFI nForce 680i LT SLI

DFI, Diamond Flower Inc. or Design For Innovation – whatever you like best – has justlp.jpg launched a long anticipated motherboard, the DFI LanParty UT NF680i LT SLI-T2R. This, the latest motherboard in the LanParty series, is designed to support Intel latest processors, including the all mighty Core 2 Extreme QX6700. But what really surprises me is that DFI chose the NF680i LT SLI chipset instead of the full featured NF680i SLI. As many of you should know, DFI´s LanParty series is built from scratch thinking on high end gamers and overclockers. What DFI did here was just skipping the reference 680i LT board – the one that eVGA, ECS, Biostar and XFX offer – and design their own motherboard, this is why it includes a third “long” PCI-Express that runs at 8x for some physics love. Oskar Wu and the rest of the LanParty team at Taiwan also dropped in third party controllers (Sil 3132 for SATA ports and VT6307 for Firewire) to complete the features the high end and fully featured NF680i SLI motherboards include. They chose a digital PWM for overclocking pleasure that keeps the socket free of obstacles for your big ass heatsink, dry ice/liquid nitrogen tube or phase change evaporator. In short words, DFI built a motherboard using a mild chipset and tweaked it to the extreme.

In the future I´ll tell you about a job offer I got from DFI USA about 18 months ago. I finally didn´t accept but it´s an anecdote worth telling.

Sony has rolled out a range of laptops based on Intel's latest 'Santa Rosa' Centrino Duo technology, sheathed in a range of "bold... eye-popping... fashion-forward" colors and equipped with a "pulsating" light that shines through the chassis to tell you what the machine's up to.

Sporting a luxurious, glossy finish and framed with silver, luminous trim, the Vaio CR notebooks reflect style and taste," the PR fluffs gushes, adding later that the CR is a "portable entertainment paradise".

'Paradise' is, as any fule kno, ancient Persian for garden - appropriate given the press release's florid prose. But there's nothing arboreal or floral about the CR's urbancolors: sangria, cosmopolitan, dove and indigo - or red, pink, white and blue, as they're more commonly known.

MacBook Air: Apple’s latest laptop

The laptop took a new meaning with the newest invention of Apple. It is so thin it fits in a regular manila envelope.

In a speech in front of about 4000 attendees to MacWorld conference (San Francisco), Steve Jobs showed the latest model of laptops: MacBook Air.

With the theatrical style that characterizes him, Steve Jobs took out a regular manila envelope, legal size, and removed a real live Macbook Air. Jobs claimed he have made a comparison with all the current thinnest laptops.

The MacBook Air will be available in stores in two weeks and it will cost $1,799. The device has a slightly wedge-shaped profile. It weighs about 3 pounds, and sports a thickness of 0.16-0.76 inches. It’s 12.8 inches wide and 8.95 inches deep. The MacBook Air can get about 5 hours of battery life with wireless networking turned on.

Latest laptops: Hot and cheap

Here at Crave, as we stare longingly at our giant chocolate Easter eggs, we can't help but remember that oh-so-long-ago New Year's resolution to finally get fit. Thankfully, the latest laptops are doing the work for us -- they're slim, trim and a whole lot sexier.

You'd have to be living in a rabbit hole to not know that thin is in this year. Just 19mm at its thickest point, Apple's MacBook Air sports one of the most innovative designs we've ever seen. But it's not alone in the department of sleek. The Toshiba Portege R500 tips the scales at a meagre 779g, which isn't much more than a loaf of bread. Like a gym membership card, you could easily put the Tosh in your bag and forget it's there.

If it's mobility you're after, may we introduce the Lenovo ThinkPad X300? With its 13.3-inch screen and solid-state drive -- they're all the rage, too -- it ups the ante on the Air and R500, making for an intense battle of the featherweights.

The laptop manufacturers must also realise that your well-earned monthly dosh is, like ours, split between your gym membership and trips to the chippy, and have started offering low-cost laptops that don't skimp on quality. The Asus Eee PC 701 started the trend, but there's a bevy of newbies waiting to take pity on your wallet. The Dell Vostro 1400 starts at just £233, has a range of configurations and, dude -- it's a Dell. While it may not be as stylish as its XPS M1530 sibling, we'd be surprised if you could find a more fea

ture-friendly option for that sum.

Bringing up the rear is Packard Bell's EasyNote XS, which, at £399 might seem pricey in comparison, but it one-ups its competitors with a 30GB hard drive. How's that for value? Check out our round-up of cheap laptops for a side-by-side comparison.

It couldn't be easier to buy a laptop that's small in size or light on your wallet. Throw indecision to the wind and tuck in to some fabulous machines. We'll handle the chocolate. -Shannon Doubleday

Lenovo’s Latest Laptops Promise Battery Life To The EXtreme…Sorta, Kinda

x61.jpg
If you frequently use the excuse “my battery died” to get out of working, don’t buy the new Lenovo ThinkPad X61 or X61s notebooks or the X61 Tablet. According to the company’s details on the three systems, the ThinkPad X61s will keep you up and running for more than 12 hours and the ThinkPad X61 and X61 Tablet will run approximately up to 11 and 10 hours respectively. Of course, this is with the combination of an eight-cell standard battery and optional extended life battery, but still, that’s a crazy amount of productivity from just two batteries.

Along with the extended battery life comes an improved design for broadband wireless, called Ultra Connect II, so you can get a signal anywhere. Lenovo claims up to a 30 percent improvement above previous models. (And you thought that was just a regular, old antenna.)

x61tab.jpg
The ThinkPad X61 Tablet gets some new technology, too, by way of its SuperView screens. A “direct bonding technology” improves readability in direct sunlight while simultaneously helping prevent scratches. All of the X61’s get standard ThinkPad security features, though, including “new 32-byte hard drive password protection and optional I/O port disablement capabilities.” Ever worry about someone connecting a flash drive to your laptop and walking off with gigs of your crucial data? Well you should be, ’cause it happens all the freakin’ time.

Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 Review

With only a 10in screen, the tiny Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 ultra portable notebook provides some reasonable connectivity and despite its size, it even includes an optical drive. AS many ultra portable laptops the long battery life was excellent, but its performance still need to be improved. To keep battery life up and heat emissions down Fujitsu has used the Intel U1400 single core 1.20GHz Ultra Low Voltage CPU, but might have benefited from using Intel’s slightly more powerful Dual Core Ultra Low Voltage CPU, the U2500. Overall our experience using the P7230 with Windows Vista Business Edition was smooth, but some small performance hiccups during basic tasks suggest that it may struggle a little with more taxing applications. The P7230 encoded 53 minutes of WAV files to 192Kbps MP3 files in four minutes and 36 seconds, which is a fairly slow but reasonable. We tested the system with its out-of-the-box configuration using 1GB of 533MHz DDR2 RAM, but increasing the RAM to the maximum of 2GB will certainly help performance. Its other specifications include an 80GB hard disk and onboard graphics.

Core Duo chip inside MacBook Pro gives you the power of two processors wherever you go. Now it’s a breeze to render complex 3D models, enjoy smooth playback of 1080p HD video, or host a four-way video conference. Your eyes will light up when you see how the MacBook Pro’s crisp, widescreen displays have lit up — they’re up to 67% brighter than their predecessors. MacBook Pro features a 667MHz frontside bus, memory that runs faster than any previous Mac notebook, and superfast graphics performance. Add it all up and you get up to five times the speed of the PowerBook G4. Features * Processor: 1 GHz PowerPC G4 * Memory: 256MB DDR SDRAM, 256KB - L2 Cache * Hard Drive: 1 x 60 GB Ultra ATA drive * Integrated Features: Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW), V.92 Modem, 10/100BaseT Ethernet, ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 32MB * Screen Size: 14.1” XGA LCD * Weight: 5.9 lbs. * Included Operating System: Mac OS X version 10.3 “Panther”

Dell Brings Core i5 and i7 to Studio XPS Desktops

Following AMD’s launch of its latest server chips last week, it’s Intel’s turn to be in the spotlight.

Intel plans to launch its newest generation of desktop processors on Monday. Called Core i7, the chips are aimed at the high-end desktop and gaming market.

The move puts Intel ahead of its rival AMD by more than a few months, as AMD’s comparable desktop processor isn’t scheduled to launch until early next year.

"AMD now just doesn’t have a competitive chip against Intel on the desktop," says Patrick Wang, an analyst with brokerage firm Wedbush Morgan.

And until AMD launches its product, Intel is going to be the only option for consumers who want the latest chips for their computers, says Wang.

The Core i7 will be almost four to six times faster than Intel’s current platform, says the company, and will have greater power efficiency than ever. It is based on the 45-nanometer production technology that first appeared in a server chip called Xeon (aka Penryn), which debuted earlier this year.

The 45-nm chips utilize smaller circuitry than the previous, 65-nm generation, making them faster, and also enabling Intel to manufacture them more cheaply.

The new Core i7 chips are based on a newly designed microarchitecture called Nehalem, which includes major design changes in areas such as power management and integrated memory control.

The first three quad-core Core i7 chips from Intel will reintroduce "hyperthreading" technology, which gives the chips the ability to execute 8 threads simultaneously on 4 processing cores, greatly increasing their processing power. Hyperthreading was seen earlier in Pentium 4 chips and some Xeon processors from Intel.

Core i7 processors are also different from their predecessors in that they have "QuickPath," a new microarchitecture that integrates memory controller into each microprocessor. QuickPath will replace Front Side Bus used in
Xeon and Itanium platforms.

The move increases the bandwidth directly available to the processor, reducing lag time before a CPU can begin executing the next instruction.

"Core i7 will be one of the first Intel chips to integrate a memory controller," says Shane Rau, PC analyst at research firm IDC, "though it is something AMD has had for a while."

Intel is taking no chances with Core i7. The company has spent millions to test the chips and ensure flaws in it don’t trip it up, says The New York Times.

In the past, both Intel and AMD have paid a big price for bugs in their chips. In 1994, Intel’s Pentium chips sported a tiny error in floating-point calculation that led to a product recall.

New chipsets underpin Intel's latest desktop PC platform

Although processors are the stars of the show in computer design, without their supporting circuitry they're only printed sand. And as processor design advances in speed, complexity and capability, the chipsets that surround them must change to support those capabilities with new and faster features.

Intel's latest motherboard chipsets, previously codenamed Alderwood and Grantsdale, are aimed at high-performance motherboards and designed to work primarily with new and repackaged Pentium 4s ranging from the Pentium 4 520 at 2.8GHz to the P4 560 at 3.6GHz. All come with 1MB of Level 2 (L2) cache and an 800MHz frontside bus; there's also a repackaged Extreme Edition part. All are housed in a new Leadless Grid Array LGA775 package. This presents the chip's connections as a grid of conductors flush with the bottom of the case -- a technique previously used on the Pentium II core.

Intel's new LGA775 package presents the Pentium 4's connections as a grid of conductors flush with the bottom of the case.

925X and 915G/P chipsets

Alderwood and Grantsdale -- more properly, the Intel 925X and the 915G and P Express Chipsets -- introduce a set of upgrades and new features. Most are shared across the family: PCI Express, 800MHz frontside bus, dual-channel DDR2 533MHz memory support, integrated Gigabit Ethernet, four serial ATA and eight USB 2.0 ports, and Intel's High Definition Audio. The 925X supports ECC memory, unlike the 915 chips, while the latter work with a selection of older Pentiums and slower memory options. The 915G also includes integrated graphics, Intel's new Graphics Media Accelerator 900, and the chips include some high-level support for wireless access points (although the wireless network adapter itself isn't included).

The 925X chipset supports ECC memory, unlike the 915G (with integrated graphics) and 915P parts.

The chipsets support legacy PCI as well as four PCI Express (PCIe) x1 'lanes' (a lane is a single uncontended bidirectional 500MB/s bus running around 6.5 times faster than PCI). Intel has dropped AGP in favour of PCI Express x16. This combines 16 PCI Express lanes into one slot, together with 75 watts of available power. With 4GB/s available simultaneously in both directions, PCI Express x16 has around four times the total bandwidth of AGP 8X and is the performance graphics bus of choice for the next generation of PCs. Intel claims it can render four simultaneous 720-line high-definition TV images at 50 frames per second (fps).

The 915G's integrated graphics are DirectX 9- and OpenGL 1.4-compatible, support QXGA (2,048-by-1,536 pixel) resolution at 85Hz and include hardware-accelerated pixel shading, shadow maps, volumetrix textures, depth bias and two-sided stencils. Intel says that the 915G delivers around 1.7 times better 3DMark 2001 performance than the graphics subsystem on the previous 865G chipset.

High Definition Audio

The High Definition Audio on the chips runs at a maximum of 192KHz 24-bit sample rate with eight channels, plus Dolby, DTS and DVD-Audio support. It also supports array microphones with up to 16 elements, a rather under-utilised technology that's useful for noise-cancelling voice recognition systems. This may be a feature of future operating systems. The final trick that the audio subsystem knows is 'jack retasking': it senses whether you've plugged a microphone, speaker or line-level audio connection into each jack and routes the audio signal appropriately. This could spell the end of the incomprehensible audio icon.

Intel's High Definition Audio supports array microphones with up to 16 elements -- useful for voice recognition systems.

Matrix Storage Technology

Intel is introducing its Matrix Storage Technology with this chipset -- strictly speaking, with the ICH6R southbridge chip. This has support for RAID 0/1 on a single two-drive array, as well as other configurations, including two RAID arrays on the four Serial ATA ports. It also includes native command queuing, where the hardware can re-order disk reads and writes to make optimal use of the head position over the disk surface, increasing performance by up to a claimed 74 percent.

DDR2 memory

Memory is faster and more flexible, thanks to DDR2 533MHz parts and a dual-channel memory path that can have the same or different amounts of RAM on each channel. The faster speed is unlikely to affect some classes of application much -- gamers can expect a couple of percent improvement over slower memory, if that -- but is useful for things like video editing and DVD playback.

Outlook

With these chips, Intel is presenting its vision of how high-performance home and office desktop PCs will be configured over the next two to three years. Although none of the technologies introduced will result in major performance improvements by themselves, they will be able to track future processor enhancements without presenting I/O bottlenecks.

msi-launches-eclipse-motherboards-ready-for-intel-i7-chip

MSI launches Eclipse motherboards ready for Intel i7 chip msi i7 ready motherboards msi

MSI today announced its century work of motherboard, Eclipse series. With the intension to shake off the burden and the restrictions due to old specifications and technologies, it offers a innovatively new architecture that adopts the latest chipset Intel® X58 that supports the latest processor Intel® Core i7 with LGA1366-pin design, along with ultra-high bandwidth QPI (Quick Path Interconnect) transmission system and high-speed DDR3 memory, resulting performance so extreme that has ever seen in motherboards. For better eco-design in power-consuming, Eclipse series has further utilized and extended the second-generation DrMOS technology, which introduced exclusively by MSI since the P45 series, to the power-supply modules of the X58 chipset and DDR3 memory, improving its power efficiency more than 95%. By natively supporting the ATI CrossFireX™ and NVIDIA® SLI® technologies, the Eclipse series offers those who searching for better 3D performance wider and more variety choice of their favor graphics cards. For better system cooling efficiency, Eclipse series comes with “Split Thermal System”, which is a MSI’s exclusive cooling system that isolate and separate the heat sink system between the power-supply modules of the chipset and memory with each other to control and manage the cooling performance separately utilizing the DrMOS technology. MSI’s innovative give you the first look and taste of the future super-computer technology.

Latest LGA1366-pin Intel® Core i7 processor architecture
The X58 chipset on the Eclipse series comes with a new processor socket LGA1366 that can support the latest Intel® Core i7 processor, code named Nehalme, supporting the third generation of HT technology realizing eight threaded computing under a quad-core architecture. The processor has integrated the memory controller used to be seen in chipset, giving substantial increase in memory performance through the 3-channel DDR3 memory slots. The new QPI transmission system design, replacing the traditional FSB architecture, further promote the memory performance by establishing the two-way data exchange to the North Bridge chip with 25.6GB/s bandwidth. For better energy-saving, the processor comes with a Turbo Mode (Dynamic Speed Dynamic Frequency Technology), which automatically switching on/off one or several of its core according to its working load to reduce unnecessary power consumption. This new and high-performance design is expected to replace the current mainstream LGA 775-pin computer platform.

First in the industry! MSI introduces the latest DrMOS chip into chipset power supply modules
In order to maximize service performance and provide a stable and adequate power supply environment, MSI Eclipse series has extended the application of second-generation DrMOS chip, which is recommended by Intel® for processor power supply application, from the processor power-supply module to the power modules of the chipset and memory, along with the exclusive hardware-level Active Power-phase Switching (APS) technology for better energy-saving. These groundbreaking applications are to provide stable power supply capacity required by the high bandwidth operations in the motherboard, and to save energy not just from the processor but the entire motherboard as well. MSI Eclipse series motherboard provides unprecedented quality of excellent power supply design.

Super cool! DrMOS-optimized Split Thermal System for ultra-low temperature operating
While having massively used and relied on the second-generation DrMOS chip, which is aimed for low-temperature operating, in the Eclipse series to reduce the servicing temperature, MSI engineers have further enhanced such effort by replacing the one-heat-pipe-for-all design with a separated arrangement one that isolate the heat sinks of the chipset and DrMOS chip to solve the thermal interfering problem between them for better heat-controlling. Both heat sinks have been designed with large-scale thermal fins and heatpipe. With all this approach, the normal service temperature is controlled successfully under 45˚C, and 80˚C when intense overclocking operation, excellent for heavy users who are looking for extreme performance from their motherboards.

Super safe! Plug & Play RAID technology “Driver Booster”
RAID capability commonly seen in other high-end motherboards is hard to handle and requires some skill to set, install and use. This is not the case for the Eclipse series. The Eclipse series comes with a new RAID technology known as “Driver Booster”, which adopts the concept of plug & play to allow users to build a RAID system using up to four Serial ATA hard drives in such an easy way requiring no complex setting and skill from users, leading to not only less accessing time and CPU resource requirements, but also better data protection and backup strategy against hard disk failure.

Ultimate sound quality! Creative X-Fi audio card to provide hardware-level decoding capability available only from MSI
Best audio quality is one of those things that MSI has always insisted and sought for, and MSI also make the case in the Eclipse series. To promote the audio quality in multimedia entertainment to a new level, the series each has been equipped with an X-Fi Xtreme Audio card, a PCI Express interface card that fully support the 24-bit Crystalizer audio decoding and CMSS-3D surround sound field technologies to preserve the resolution of audio signal during decoding and to output the best sound via 8-channel stereo surround sound speakers. This hardware approach can offer the most accurate sound positioning and best detailed and vivid sound effect, which is not available from commonly seen software approach, while not only maintain the resolution of the audio through decoding operation, but also make such operation require no CPU resource, meaning a better system performance since the CPU load will be lighter then the case using software approach. MSI high-end motherboard are the only ones that utilize hardware approach, that is Creative X-Fi audio decoder chip, to give you the high-end audio quality you deserve.

MSI Eclipse series motherboard offers three selections for users to choose from: Eclipse+, Eclipse SLI, and X58 Platinum. They are all well designed and tuned in functionality and capability with the innovative technology available from MSI, guaranteeing the Eclipse series is the best choice even for a heavy user.

Asus P5KPL-AM/PS latest motherboard

Built around an older entry-level chipset. the G31, the Asus P5KPL-AM/PS is intended mainly for budget conscious buyers. So why are we reviewing it at all? Well, Asus has equipped the motherboard with something special, which may catch the masses' eye so let's see if it's worth the hue and cry.

FEATURES: The board is built around a mainstream chipset, the Intel G31-a scaled down version of the G33. The FSB speeds are common in both, going up to 1333 MHz, and the onboard graphics is courtesy of the Intel GMA 3100. However, the south bridge and the support for RAM differ. Even though it is a mainstreamchipset , the G33 supports up to 8 GB of DDR3-800 MHz and features the ICH9 whereas this board supports only up to 4 GB of DDR2-800 MHz and features the Intel ICH7 with the mainstreamchipset.

The most striking feature is the onboard Power Stabilizer chip. The power flows through the chip before it gets distributed to the sub-systems. It also monitors and controls the flow of current, saving the board from getting fried in the case of
a power surge. The standard features include four SATA, one PATA and eight USB (four via headers) ports. There are serial and parallel ports too. The onboard graphics suffices for basic office work or just enough to watch a movie. Gaming on thischipset, however, is not ideal. Finally the package includes a user manual, driver disc and data and power cables for both SATA and PATA connectivity.

Name: Asus latest motherboard.jpg Views: 3892 Size: 66.3 KB

LAYOUT: While this may be a budget board, the layout is quite good. For instance, all the ports such as SATA and are placed at the edges of the board. If you decide to use a graphics card, it will not obstruct any installed components or ports. There is sufficient breathing space for RAM modules and the CPU socket clearance too.

PERFORMANCE: The board does justice to the entry-level segment as it performs well enough to handle light applications. However, if you want to play games or get decent graphics, then you need to install a graphics card separately.

VERDICT: At this price, it is an ideal pick for entry-level computing, especially for people living in towns and cities that are prone to unstablepower supply conditions. Do not expect anything more than being able to watch a movie using the onboard graphics.

ECS - PF88 Extreme review

An Intel board that becomes an AMD board (22/06/2005)

ECS PF88 Extreme Photograph

ECS is well known for thinking up innovative solutions for motherboards, but the company's developers have surpassed themselves with their latest motherboard; the PF88 Extreme. As a basic Intel board this is very well priced, but with the addition of the A9S SIMA card, it transforms into a reasonably priced Socket 939 AMD board.

When you first look at the motherboard you could be forgiven for thinking it's one of the new Intel Socket 775 SLI boards, as there are two PCI-E graphic slots. But on closer inspection the long slot and two rows of jumpers that separate the two reveal the truth. The reason for two graphic cards slots is quite straightforward; once you add the SIMA card into its slot it covers one of the PCI-E slots.

The basic PF88 Extreme is a well laid out Socket 775 board using an SIS 656 Northbridge combined with an SIS 965 Southbridge, and has four DIMM slots supporting up to 4GB of either dual channel DDR2-533 or DDR-667, DDR2 memory.

By using the SIS chipset, the PF88 Extreme offers something over the usual Intel 915/925 series of boards, namely two ATA/133 ports, which is very useful if you are still using an ATA drive as well as an optical drive; at least you can use both with this board.

SIS's 965 chipset offers more support for hard drives in the form of four SATA ports which can be set up in either RAID 0, 1, 0+1 or JBOD arrays. Just for good measure there are two more red-coloured SATA ports which are controlled by a Silicon Image Sil3132 chip. This offers SATA 2 support for these two ports which means NCQ (Native Command Queuing) as well, something not offered by the SIS chipset.

Adding to the features list are three PCI slots, integrated Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire and eight channel audio (Realtek ALC850), so as it stands the PF88 Extreme looks like a well featured, good value Intel motherboard.

Add another £27 (plus VAT) and the whole dimension of the board changes. For this money you get the A9S SIMA converter card which supports Socket 939 AMD processors. The card comes with an SIS 756 PCI-E compatible Northbridge which controls the two DDR400 DDR1 DIMM slots.

Unfortunately, lack of space between these memory slots and CPU socket means you have to use either the older style of AMD cooler or an appropriate sized third-party cooler, since the standard 939 cooler is just too large.

Fitting the card is a doddle, once you remember to remove the twenty (yes, twenty) jumpers that are arranged on either sized of the SIMA slot on the motherboard. The mainboard comes with two separate BIOS's and the board switches between the two depending on which processor is being used.

The whole thing works remarkably well, and despite our review board being an early sample it worked with few problems once some BIOS issues were sorted out.
